Kyle of Sutherland Development Trust employee Beth Simco has scooped the ‘Young Apprentice of the Year’ award at the Highland Business Awards!
The annual awards, which are organised by Inverness Chamber of Commerce were held at a ceremony at the Drumossie Hotel in Inverness on the 28th September as part of Highland Business Week 2018. Winners and finalists across the broad range of awards categories were recognised for their contribution to the economic success of the Highlands.
This year over 100 entries were received across the twelve categories, presenting the judges with an enormous task of narrowing down the final shortlist. The Trust had been shortlisted in the Best Social Enterprise category, but this was awarded to The Highlands Small Communities Housing Trust.
Beth began her career at the Kyle of Sutherland Development Trust by doing volunteer work experience when she was still at school. She formally began working for the Trust in September 2017 when she was offered the post of Contracts Officer. She is now studying a Business Management degree at Strathclyde University through a new Graduate Level Apprenticeship initiative designed to allow students to study whilst working at the same time.
On receiving her award, Beth who works in the Trust’s Contracts team said: “A year ago today I would have never thought that I would be the winner of ‘Apprentice of the Year’ at the Highland Business Awards. University was always a planned path. I could not be more grateful to The Kyle of Sutherland Development Trust and the Virtual Learning Academy for giving me buckets of support and inspiration to drive and project manage contracts in the Highlands. A massive thank you to Helen Houston, Valerie Houston and Cath Sutherland for the amazing opportunities that have been given to me. These three ladies have inspired me, supported me and been a constant source of knowledge and advice. This win was so unexpected, and I am so appreciative of this! Thank you.”
Valerie Houston, Contracts Manager at Kyle of Sutherland Development Trust said “We are extremely proud of Beth, she is a diligent, hard working young woman and has been a great asset to the contracts team.”
