Bridge Celebration

Bridge Celebration

December 2013 – May 2014

The bridge at Bonar Bridge has linked the communities on both sides of the Kyle of Sutherland since 1812 when the original Thomas Telford bridge was built. The present bridge is the third to span the Kyle and to celebrate its 40th year an ambitious programme of workshops and activities was delivered thanks to grant funding from Awards for All.

The celebration started with the switching on of the Christmas lights and finished with a Family Ceilidh on Grand Finale day on 17th of May. The bridge was celebrated in poetry with workshops held with the primary schools, in village halls and with our older residents in the Bradbury Centre. For those who liked crafting there were felt, fabric and stitch workshops which created three panels depicting each of the three bridges. These now hang in Migdale Hospital.

Art, photography and a Bake a Bridge completion ensured that there was something for everyone with the creative results on display all day on the day of the Grand Finale, Family Ceilidh.

The Family Ceilidh rounded off the celebrations in fine form with a prize giving and the premiere of a specially commissioned choral piece composed by local musician John Brozovsky. Performed by local choirs and school pupils it was a fitting end to five months of busy, creative celebrations of the bridge at Bonar Bridge.

Kyle Live

The Kyle of Sutherland Development Trust was awarded £5,800 from ‘Awards for All’ to deliver a series of live music and cultural events across Sutherland in 2016.

The project has allowed people from all sections of the community to have the opportunity to attend or take part in live music events in the Sutherland area. All of the events were well attended and people got back into the way of attending live music events.

398 people, children or adults, attended the live music events and 35 attended the workshops. So it really has been a great success. A new traditional music group has been established by the Trust as a result of the interest in the events. The Trust provides hall hire to enable the group to meet on a regular basis.
