To mark #SaferInternetDay on the 5 Feb 2019, we launched #DIGITALKYLE!

Kyle of Sutherland Development Trust has teamed up with several organisations to curate a series of FREE digital themed events that will take place in February and March at the Kyle of Sutherland Hub in Bonar Bridge.

The events are targeted at different groups, with the aim of raising awareness about cyber security risks for both families and businesses – but also to help increase digital participation so that people of all ages can enhance their digital skills and have fun!

SCVO One Digital –  Digital Champion Training

Thursday 21st Feb at The HUB
10.30am – 3.30pm

Delivered through the SCVO One Digital programme, this workshop is designed for staff and volunteers within the Third Sector who are working with people in the community who struggle with digital skills… Perhaps older people, disabled people or those with low incomes. Do you want to help people to benefit from getting online by developing their essential digital skills?

HIE – Cyber Sense Workshop for businesses

Tuesday 26th Feb at The HUB
2.00 – 3.30pm

An interactive session delivered by Highlands & Islands Enterprise (HIE)  to raise awareness of Cyber Security risks and show what businesses can do to protect themselves. Concepts such as ‘phishing and being ‘pwned’ will be explained and audiences will be taught to spot scams, dissect spurious emails and prevent hackers taking over their online lives.

Digital Storytelling – for people of all ages!

Thursday 28th February at The Hub
10.30 am – 2.30pm

Delivered by Irene Warner Mackintosh from Mhor Collective:

Would you like to learn how to make the most of your phone, laptop or tablet device but don’t really know where to start? We’d love to help you take and share photos, make videos and try social media in our digital storytelling workshops. We can also help you with the basics of staying safe online.

Bring along your own device, and our friendly tutors will get you started, in a fun and relaxing environment.

These workshops are funded by the Aspiring Communities Fund, SCVO and Highlife Highland. Mhor Collective is delivering at The Hub in partnership with Lairg Learning Centre.

Internet Safety Workshop for families

Tuesday 5th March at The HUB
3.30 – 4.30 pm

Constable Alan MacLennan (Co-ordinator & Preventions and Interventions officer) from Police Scotland – Highlands and Islands Division will deliver a Cyber Safety Workshop aimed and parents and children.

Also on the Panel:

Dale Pryde- MacDonald from Kyle of Sutherland Development Trust (who is also the Child Wellbeing & Protection Officer at Brora Rangers Football Club) will be able to highlight the use of the internet in sport.

Cameron Warren from Highland Wireless will be there to offer his perspective from a technical point of view and can also answer any questions about the Superfast Broadband Service that is available in the Kyle of Sutherland.

UHI STEM HUB – Coding workshops for children

Wednesday 6th March at The HUB

2.45 – 3.30 pm      (Primary 1-3 )
3.30 – 4.30 pm      (Primary 4-7)

Delivered by the University of the Highlands and Islands STEM HUB team. Children will be introduced to the basic concepts of computer programming. Taking part in hands-on, floor based activities, children will learn about the importance of logic and quality of information in programming. Encouraging pupils to start coding for themselves we will introduce some online games that they can continue to practice at home or back in school.

Google for Businesses (delivered by Google representative Andrew McGrath)

Saturday 16th March at the Hub

Time: 4:30pm -6pm (1.5 hours)

Discover the online tools you can use to promote a business online, create your marketing strategy, keep track of your business and attract the right customers. This whistle-stop tour will look at the range of online tools available from Google. Feel free to bring your own laptop or borrow a Chromebook and jump right in!

Are you an up and coming Youtube star? Do you want to create a beautiful blogging website? Come along and discover the online tools you can use to safely create your digital self. Feel free to bring your own laptop or borrow a Chromebook and jump right in!

Trip Advisor and Online Review Management (delivered by Business Gateway)

Tuesday 26th March at the Hub
9:30am – 4:00pm

With the popularity of social media, thousands of people get to hear about an experience with your organisation. Are you willing to leave your online reputation to chance? This workshop will show you how to manage Trip Advisor, how to respond to reviews and how to use Trip Advisor for market research.
