The winners of Scotland’s annual awards for innovation and success in social enterprise were announced at an awards ceremony in The Scottish Parliament last night. (7th November 2018). Social Enterprise Scotland issued a call for applications earlier in the year, urging Scotland’s social enterprises to demonstrate how they’re improving our economy and society.

Social Enterprise of the Year 2018 was awarded to CCI Scotland, Environmental Social Enterprise was awarded to Point and Sandwick Trust and the One to Watch winner is Caledonia Cremation.

Helen Houston the former manager of Kyle of Sutherland Development Trust, was awarded the accolade of Social Enterprise Champion (over 26) for her outstanding work with the Trust and other Highland organisations over the years.

Commenting on her award, Helen said: “I’m delighted to have been acknowledged for my community development work during the last 25 years.  It was really a life time achievement award!  Having recently stepped down from my role at the Trust I am now looking forward to new challenges whatever they may be – time will tell.”

Pete Campbell, the Chairman of Kyle of Sutherland Development Trust said, “Helen was with the Trust for five years. In that time she’s transformed it from little more than a burgeoning concept to the vibrant and effective community organisation it now is. She has led the Trust through about £5m of inward investment to the area, some notable and award-winning capital projects – Falls of Shin, The Barn and Drovers Square in Ardgay, the Bonar Bridge Post Office and the introduction of a Community Broadband Service. In addition to this she set up life changing social improvement activities assisting our communities with fuel and food poverty, programmes for physical wellbeing and designing a strategy for community self-improvement… We are absolutely delighted that Helen’s hard work has been acknowledged in these awards and we wish her the very best in her plans for the future.”

Shona Sinclair, Chair of Social Enterprise Scotland, said: “Congratulations to all the winners of the Social Enterprise Awards Scotland 2018. A big thanks to everyone who entered the awards this year, reflecting the diverse range of organisations that are helping build a better economy and a fairer Scotland. Alongside our new Chief Executive we look forward to the further growth and development of Scotland’s social enterprise movement.”
